New techniques in glass I’m exploring

New techniques include:

  • Abstracts! So different for me. I’m usually a very nature based person. Due to COVID, I couldn’t concentrate on my thick panels, so I tried using glass enamels a la Marguerite Beneke.

  • Rouge Glass Enamels: Beneke teaches out of Canada and unfortunately, I have not been able to attend one of her classes in person. She offers videos online, which has been an excellent tool to learn about these enamels. They respond a little differently than EZ Fire and some of the other enamels on the market.

  • Seascapes: Water is one of the visuals in my life that is very influencing to my art. We’ve traveled to many beautiful places along the Gulf of Mexico, Cape Town, South Africa, Florida, Maui…you get the idea. My phone is loaded with pictures of sunset/sunrise, crashing waves, peaceful waves. Using the new Rogue enamels, I’m trying my hand at painting. Quite different than painting on canvas, watercolor or other traditional methods of painting.

  • Manipulating objects to create glass art: In 2018, I had the privilege of seeing Craig Mitchell Smith’s glass at the St. Louis Arboretum. I love flowers but didn’t have much interest in creating florals in glass. HOWEVER! I did take a class with Craig and learned so much. I am currently exploring techniques he taught in class and how I might incorporate them into my art.
