From humble beginnings, working with scrapes of glass, Narcissus invented this technique by mastering the effect of Frit and Fire over the glass surface. Thoughts from Narcissus Quagliata, one of my hero’s in glass.

I discovered glass renewing my knowledge of ceramics. Once that kiln was opened, I was captivated by fused glass.

That 3 day teachers class for ceramics and fused glass was 10 years ago. Since then, I have been blessed to study with some great glass artists and students. I’ve made friends across the nation and seen some of our great country by attending classes. Currently, I am learning from Tim Carey about the techniques used in the https://timcarey.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/IMG_0073-1-e1532354022286.jpg

The start of my portrait using Tim’s technique.

First, let me say I don’t do portraits. Second, my left brain/right brain are at war in this process. There’s an image in enamel under the pieces of colored glass. I traced the lines/shadows I thought were important. Now, I’m braking up colored pieces into a mosaic type collage. This will then be fired in the kiln. My left brain wants it to look human. My right brain wants it to be loose and free, impressionist. Not sure which side will win.
